What has happened to side skirts in recent years? The market seems awash with winglets and fins designed to catch your eye in a photo without any consideration of whether they suit the vehicle or if they'll still look good in a few years time. Whilst we think these more aggressive side skirts have their place - you can find a few examples in our own catalogue - you can't go wrong with the classic flat full-length side skirt designed to make the vehicle appear lower and wider without taking it to the extreme.
The Story
Back in March 2021, we began developing the very first production carbon fibre styling kit for the BMW G80 M3 and G82 M4. At the time, we weren't aware that this kit would turn MHC LDN from a small-time manufacturer into a well-known full-scale operation.
When the BMW G80 M3 was launched, the looks were... let's say... divisive. This was the perfect opportunity for us to turn the new M3 into a car that looked as good as it performed. If BMW had knocked the design out of the park, there would have been very little need for an aftermarket body kit.
The Need For Side Skirts
The side skirts are a very important component of an aftermarket bodykit. They are responsible for connecting the front splitter and rear diffuser in a way that also compliments the vehicle's OEM side profile.
Design Philosophy
For our initial low-line carbon kit, we wanted to create something timeless. The goal was to curate a design we could see working in 25 years time, when the cars reach classic status.
The aftermarket styling industry has become much like the fast-fashion industry with companies constantly churning new trends with no regard for design integrity. We want the SK1 Side Skirts to be your 'one-and-done'.
Quality & Durability
This is an area we have always prided ourselves on. If we wanted the SK1 side skirts to look good in 25 years time, they would need to last 25 years. We go to great lengths to ensure every single set is absolutely flawless in strength, fit and finish.
This begins in the design process where we take multiple cars in for 3D scanning that allows us to replicate the OEM side skirts in our specialised CAD software. From these digital images, we brought the SK1 concept drawings to life, securing the necessary dimensions. This data is used to create a unique aluminium mould where the dry carbon fibre sheets will be laid. Aluminium moulds are significantly more expensive than the alternatives, costing tens of thousands of pounds to develop, however they deliver far superior quality and much tighter tolerances.
Despite this, not every set that comes out the mould is without fault. Whilst under extreme heat to cure, imperfections can arise. These sets are highlighted and discarded during the first stage of our quality control (QC1). Faults can include any flaws within the pre-preg carbon weave or distortion.
Even with a perfect initial base, laquer could be applied unevenly or, if low-quality, could react poorly with the air (QC2). We use a specially-developed laquer engineered specifically for coating carbon fibre to provide the best results. It provides incredible gloss and is heavily resistant to UV rays, as well as corrosion.
The final stage of quality control includes scratch testing samples from the batch, test-fitting and polishing to make sure the set is something we're proud to put our name on.
This is why the price is what it is. It may seem like a huge investment but we manage to keep it far below the price of BMW's M Performance side skirts and many other competitors'. Believe it or not, we've now seen SK1s with over 100,000 miles on them from a G80 M3 owner in America - still holding up beautifully.
